“I believe Muslims have the right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan with local laws and orders. This is America and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcomed in this country and that they will not be treated differently by their government is essential to who we are.” -President Obama

Group meeting 2

For our second group project we were in the library. As a group we watched a few more clips about Park51 and started brainstorming on how to complete the project.

I suggested a format for the magazine which Alayna and Shannon both really liked and agreed it sounded like the best way to complete the project. After deciding on the layout we then discussed what types of articles to have in the magazine, how to make sure we got all the information included that we needed and still make it fun and creative. I'm really excited for how the finished project is going to look. I think we had a pretty clever idea with the format and everything we are putting into it.

At the end of the meeting, we decided how to divide up the work so that everyone is doing the same amount and the project gets done in time to get it printed and turned in. The plan is for Shannon to work with the Fox News material while Alayna is working on the Colbert and Daily shows. They are both supposed to write 4 articles to put in the magazine. I am them doing all the "surprises" of the magazine and then tying everything together and adding in the ethics and theories of the press. Shannon and Alayna are going to have their articles to me by Thursday so I can put everything together and get the magazine printed and bound to have turned in by Tuesday.

Overall, I feel like everyone did a great job in the meeting and the work is divided up the best way possible. I'm excited to see all the information we have found put into the magazine and see the finished project!

Group meeting #1

Alayna, Shannon and I met in the library during class time on Tuesday. We looked up information on the fact check websites that were listed on the class blog, as well as cnn.com, foxnews.com, colbertnation.com, and thedailyshow.com
I feel as if we found a lot of good information, however we still have a lot to do. We've decided that Fox definitely distorts the information to make it look like the Muslims are being insensitive towards the victims of 9/11. One of our favorite clips we found was an interview between CNN and Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the leader of these community center's and Mosques close to Ground Zero. Rauf explains that we also knew people who were victims in the Twin Towers and that he is not trying to be insensitive but give people a place to congregate.
In addition to finding more information, we are also looking for templates for a magazine so our project will have a professional look to it.
